Tyler Cross, an 18-year old freshman at the University of Texas, passed away on
November 17th after falling from the fifth-floor balcony of an apartment in a
private dormitory near campus.
A person walking a dog found the body on a sidewalk near University Towers.
Cross was taken to Brackenridge Hospital, where he died.
Cross, a former All-State Midfielder at the
Lovett School in Atlanta,
Georgia, had pledged the SAE Fraternity and was a member of the
Longhorn Lacrosse Club.
He had followed his older brother Colin to the
University of Texas in Austin and
was majoring in engineering.
A candlelight vigil was held last Friday night in Austin that was attended by
many teammates and friends.
An honor student in high school, Cross was a former football and lacrosse team
captain. He received numerous academic and athletic awards during his tenure at
the Lovett School, including the 2005 GHSA Peach Bowl Scholar Athlete Scholarship
Award for Region 5-AA. Cross also served as President of the Men's Chorus and was
an active member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church and the Buckhead Young Life
organization.
Lovett won the Georgia State Championship in 2005 and was runner-up in 2006.
Cross was twice selected to the All-State lacrosse team.
"This has been tough on the team and the community," said Texas Head Lacrosse
Coach Noah Fink. "We will miss Tyler and will now focus our energy on helping his
family."
The Cross Family will receive friends on Monday, November 20th from 6 - 8pm at
H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
The Funeral Service with reception following will be held on Tuesday afternoon
(Nov. 21st) at 2pm at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Marietta, Georgia. A
private burial will be held at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs.
