Freshman middie Johnny McKnight registered a game-high four points on two goals and two assists to lead No. 19 Texas to an 11-8 victory over Santa Clara in an MCLA Division I game Thursday night.

Sophomore attackman Joseph Scaling added three goals, senior attackman Evans Swann had three points on a goal and two assists and junior attackman Doug Boyer scored a pair of goals to help the Longhorns (11-3) bounce back from their loss to Illinois.

Senior middie Paul McCloud finished with two points on a goal and an assist, and senior middies Stephen Brandiwie and Alex Kroviak each had a goal to round out the scoring for Texas.

In a losing effort, freshman middie Jason Travis and senior middie Kevin Bayly each scored two goals for Santa Clara (6-4), which has lost three of its last four.

Texas led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, 6-5 at halftime and 10-6 going into the final 15 minutes. Kroviak gave the Longhorns a five-goal edge when he scored with 8:52 remaining in regulation before Santa Clara pulled two back before the end.

“We didn’t play great, but we did enough to get by,” Texas head coach Noah Fink said. “We’re still recovering from some time off at the end of spring break. I think we’re getting over the hump.”
