Freshman middie Trevor Howard and junior middie William Lawson each registered a co-game-high five points to lead No. 18 Texas to a 20-11 upset victory over No. 6 Florida State in an MCLA Division I game Saturday afternoon in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Howard scored three goals and added two assists, and Lawson had two goals and three assists, as the Longhorns (6-2) rolled to a surprisingly easy victory.

Sophomore middie Johnny McKnight and freshman attackman Spencer Price each added four points on three goals and one assist, senior attackman Charlie Fraser had four points on two goals and two assists and freshman middie Austin Mai had three points on two goals and one assist for Texas.

“We came out hungry for a change,” Texas head coach Noah Fink said. “It’s the first time we played hard for four quarters. We’re still not healthy, but we’re getting healthier.”

In defeat, junior attackman Tom Byrne had a team-high three points on two goals and one assist, junior middie Josh Eustice scored twice and junior middie Jon Yates scored a pair of goals for Florida State (9-2).

The game was tied, 3-3, at the end of the first quarter before Texas began to take control in the second. The Longhorns led 7-4 at halftime before they exploded for seven goals in the third quarter to take a 14-8 lead. The Seminoles’ defensive meltdown continued in the fourth quarter, as Texas fired in six more goals during the final 15 minutes to win going away.

“They just beat us in every aspect of the game,” Florida State head coach Bill Harkins said.
