After coming off an exhilarating two-win weekend against SMU and
LSU, Texas placed its unbeaten record on the line against the
University of North Texas this past Saturday. Not only had the win
against the Mustangs brought praise to the team, but it also revealed
an important aspect they wished to repair.
This past
week’s focus against the Mean Green was to play a more complete game
and to obtain and hold an early lead. As the game began with Texas
gaining possession, the offense quickly moved the ball, creating a 1-0
lead. The Longhorns continued this theme, scoring seven more times in
the first half. On the other end of the field, Texas’ defense proved
much too physical and talented for the Mean Green’s offense by keeping
them out of the crease and capitalizing on ground balls. Between the
lines, Texas improved on their rides and clears that have not been as
prominent in previous games. The senior goalie, Garrett Cox, allowed no
goals, permitting an 8-0 lead at half. In the second half, Texas held
their lead and their control of the game with a final score of 13-4.
With
the day ending in a win for the Longhorns, Texas advances to a 5-0
record. The win over the Eagles showed the ability to execute their
pre-game goal of winning both halves and playing a complete game. The
Longhorns will face their next challenge on Saturday, February 25,
against the University of Houston Cougars at noon, here in Austin.
