Junior middie William Lawson registered a team-high four points on two goals and two assists to lead No. 17 Texas to an 11-8 victory over Southern Methodist in an MCLA Division I game Friday night in Austin.
Junior attackman Charlie Fraser added three goals, freshman middie Trevor Howard had three points on two goals and an assist and sophomore middie Johnny McKnight scored twice to help the Longhorns (3-0) win their third straight to start the season.
Senior attackman Doug Boyer finished with a goal and an assist, and junior middie Alex Ierullo had a goal to round out the scoring for Texas.
Defensively, junior goalie Phil West saved 13 shots.
In defeat, senior middie Riker Vermilye had a game-high five points on four goals and an assist for SMU, which fell to 1-1.
Texas led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 7-3 at halftime and 9-6 at the end of the third quarter.
The Longhorns extended their lead in the fourth to five goals and took an 11-6 lead when Lawson scored with 8:52 remaining in regulation.
“It’s good to get off to a good start,” Texas head coach Noah Fink said. “We like to keep getting better every time we step on the field. SMU’s a very strong opponent. It’s nice to get the early-season win on them.”
