Sophomore middie William Lawson had game-high four points on a goal and three assists to lead No. 21 Texas to a 12-3 victory over Southwestern in an MCLA interdivisional game Thursday night.

Sophomore attackman Charlie Fraser scored a game-high three goals, and senior attackman Evans Swann added three points on two goals and an assist to help the Longhorns (1-0) win their season opener.

Junior attackman Doug Boyer and sophomore middie Eric Fleps each had a pair of goals, senior middie Paul McCloud dished two assists and middies Tyler Harris and Johnny McKnight both scored once for Division I Texas, which used a six-goal third quarter and a nine-goal second half to break open a close game.

Southwestern, which is ranked No. 9 in Division II, fell to 1-2.

The game was tied, 1-1, at the end of the first quarter, and Texas led 3-1 at halftime. But it was all Longhorns in the second half.

Texas used a 6-1 run in the third quarter to take a 9-2 lead going into the final 15 minutes.

“Basically, our guys just woke up,” Texas head coach Noah Fink said. “We came out and played at practice speed. We also had a lot of technical fouls. It took us a while to remember how to play the game.

“Our guys came out in the second half a little bit more confident and a little bit more aggressive. It took a couple quarters to knock the rust off.”
