After a long week of drills and hard work brought by the start of a
new season, the Longhorns were anxious to finally step on the field and
compete. On Saturday, the Horns put their off-season training up
against the Southwestern Pirates in a preseason scrimmage. With quick
goals by sophomores Travis McShane and Zac Wilson, Texas looked to
establish their lead early. At a score of 3-0 midway through the first
half, the Pirates acquired back-to-back goals bringing the score within
one. With the pressure on, Texas was determined to put the game away as
they completed the day with an 11-5 outing in favor of the Horns.
Through
the entire scrimmage, it became apparent that the Longhorns have
increased their level of play from last season. The offense, led by
Senior Attackman Eric Zissman, created many scoring opportunities as
they moved the ball effectively. On the defensive end, Texas continued
to overpower the Pirates’ offense with clean checks and big hits by
defensive powerhouse, Dennis Sukholutsky. With less than two weeks
until their trip to Stillwater, the Horns move to repair the weaknesses
apparent in the scrimmage and concentrate on their game strategy for
the season opener against Oklahoma State. Texas will face-off against
the Cowboys on Saturday, February 4, at 11AM followed by a 3PM start
against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
