Texas Lacrosse 2007

About Texas Lacrosse

The University of Texas at Austin has the best developed lacrosse program in the Southwest. We have a tradition of winning and a legacy of producing officials and coaches. More recently, we have looked beyond the Southwest region, gearing our program to compete as a national one.

A founding member of the Southwest Lacrosse Association, we competed against other SWLA collegiate lacrosse clubs throughout Texas and Louisiana. With entry into the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, we now play on a nationwide level, eg: Illinois, Michigan, BYU, as we continue to compete against our lone star state rivals in the Lone Star Alliance. Hence, with a season that begins in late January, we average 17-20 games.

Sports Club Status
Lacrosse at Texas is not a varsity sport. It is a student run club within the Student Sports Club Association and sponsored by the University's Division of Recreational Sports. Without varsity funding from the University, we maintain a "varsity-level" program. In fact, our records are fed into the USILA's national database, putting us on a competitve basis with other varsity programs and sanctioned USILA collegiate clubs around the country.

The Process
Texas Lacrosse is not for everyone. Instead, we focus on two processes: the student and the athlete, in that order. If you want a lacrosse degree, don't come here. At a university which has consistently attracted the largest number of National Merit Finalists in the nation, we need good individuals with pride, character and drive in the classroom. With an alumni association that sponsors an academic scholarship and four recent graduates who are now also medical school ones, this process works.

At Texas, we work hard, play hard, develop lacrosse skills and foster a respect for the national growth of the sport. We are a program that takes much pride in the way we conduct ourselves on and off the field. Then, we let the winning and losing take care of itself. That's our process. We develop our program with long term goals in mind so that, for example, three years from now we're playing for the national title. We focus on the process.

And the process works. Since 1974 Texas Lacrosse has never suffered a losing season. Currently, we are the only team to carry both the titles of threepeat SWLA Champions as well as the threepeat All-South (SWLA, SELC) Champions. If you are a high school student interested in becoming a part of a championship program, or if you are interested in our program here at Texas, please Email us for more information. We look forward to hearing from you. Hookem!
